Remembering Barlow Struthers Patten

Peacefully with his wife by his side at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital on Friday May15, 2026 at the age of 74.

Barlow was a devoted husband, father, grandpa, educator, author, mentor, storyteller, and friend whose humour, wisdom, and steady presence touched many lives.

He was Meg’s loving husband and best friend, her person and partner through life’s joys and challenges. He was a proud and loving father to Jonathan (Maggie Hilton) and Sarah (Sean Gehring) and Grandpa to Quinlan, Claire, Elim, Nathan and Naomi.

He dedicated his career to education as a principal, professor and mentor, inspiring students and staff with compassion, encouragement, leadership, and a willingness to have the difficult conversations. He found joy in canoeing, bicycling, and camping, and brought laughter with his quick wit and wonderful sense of humour.

After an 18-year courageous battle with Parkinson disease and dementia, we take comfort in knowing he is now at peace, free from suffering, and safely home with our Lord and Saviour. He will be forever loved, deeply missed, and lovingly remembered. For those who wish, donations in Barlow’s memory may be made to Parkinson Canada https://www.parkinson.ca/get-involved/personal-giving/

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Carson Funeral Home L. Doolittle Chapel, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia on Friday May 29, 2026 from 10 A.M. until time of funeral service at 11 A.M. Interment St. Andrew’s St. James’ Cemetery, Orillia.

Condolences

  1. Aileen Solomon (new Patten)

When my brothers and I were kids (I was 9), Uncle Barlow came to my mom Judy’s funeral. And though the occasion was most sad, Uncle Barlow brought a twinkle in his eye, joy and laughter and us kids were tickled pink to have him there. So even today, my memory of that day is not of sadness but gladness. And I am thankful. Thinking of you all today and Praying for you, that there will be joy among the tears. Love Aileen

  2. Gail Jessup

I was fortunate to be able to work with Barlow, at Ferris Glen School, as his vice-principal. Barlow was an exceptional mentor, a kind hearted person, with a wicked sense of humour. I learned so much fro him, and credit my success as a principal, to him. While his school family was important to him, his love for Meg, Johnathan, and Sarah, was unsurpassed. Barow will be missed.

  3. Karen

Dear Meg and family Eric and I send our condolences for the passing of dear funny and loving Barlow. While we only knew him for a short period of time, we enjoyed every moment with him. We know he is at peace now after a long and difficult struggle with a cruel disease. May God comfort you and your family now and in the days, months and years to come. Hold close all your wonderful memories of time with him.

  4. Marylou Johnston

  5. Andrew & Nancy

Thinking of Uncle Barlow's family as this difficult time - Auntie Margaret, Sarah, Jonathan, and their families. Of course, we know where Uncle Barlow is now, and that brings comfort, but saying our earthly good-bye is not easy. May you find peace knowing all who are saved will see him again. Love Andrew & Nancy.

  6. Johnny Demerse
