Remembering John Francis Mattinson

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Mattinson on January 8th, at the age of 76. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends. John embodied the values of a true public servant, dedicating much of his life to the community of Orillia and contributing greatly to it over the years.

John was born in Orillia on July 9, 1948, at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, where he would later serve as a board member and a member of its foundation. John was a proud graduate of Queen’s University, where he earned his Bachelor’s of Electrical Engineering, with honours, in 1976. His career was spent in the electrical power generation and distribution sector, his career saw him develop his skills from coast-to-coast across Canada, he would eventually return home to serve the former Orillia Power Corporation, where he would end his career as its President and Secretary.

As a member of the local Rotary Club, John was heavily involved in charitable work and local initiatives. Among his most cherished contributions, John was a key member of the team who took care of the miniature Rotary Club train at Couchiching Park and was involved in maintaining, upgrading and operating the local attraction for many years.

John is survived by his wife, Lorraine Bergeron, his children, Céleste (Shanice) and Marcus (Brooklyn) and his nephews, James (Pauline) and Daniel (Jean).

A celebration of life will be held at Carson Funeral Home on February 1st from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a brief prayer and a few words beginning at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation or Parkinson’s Canada.

While he is now gone, John’s legacy stands as one of unwavering commitment to his family and local community, both of which he loved dearly until his last breath. He will be sorely missed.

Condolences

  1. Kevin and Michelle Vennard

Lorraine, Marcus, Celeste and families. We were very saddened to learn of John's passing. It was a great pleasure to get to know John for the many years we served together in Rotary. John could always be counted on to speak for what was right. His moral compass was always true. He never hesitated to volunteer for any job. A defining moment of John's character came when the Rotary Club needed a certified amusement park mechanic to keep our little train running at Couchiching Park. When we were unable to hire a certified mechanic, John studied the material and passed the exam so that he could certify the safety of our train and keep it running. We will miss John. Unfortunately, Michelle and I are in North Bay looking after grandchildren this weekend so we are unable to bring our condolences in person. Our thoughts are with you.
